Shri A.M.M. Murugappa Chettiar Research Centre (MCRC)

Shri A.M.M. Murugappa Chettiar Research Centre (MCRC), Chennai is a non-profit research organization, established in 1973 and registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. MCRC is recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial R d by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India, as an independent Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO). MCRC was a Technology Resource Centre for CAPART, Govt. of India and continues to strive for Excellence in Rural Development under Department of Science and Technology (DST) Core Support Programme. MCRC has three campuses, two of which viz., the Science Centre and the Technology Centre, are located in Chennai to carry out research activities and technology development, respectively. The third campus - Agriculture Centre located at Vadakadambadi, near Mahabalipuram about 50 km south of Chennai is a field station to test our research findings before deploying at various project sites in Tamil Nadu. Since its inception, the Centre has brought together many scientists, engineers, technologists and other like-minded people from several partner NGOs and SHGs to find sustainable solutions for the farming and rural communities. In addition to this, conservation of natural resources, health and hygiene for students of schools and colleges are also advocated through a wide range of hands-on training programmes and workshops. MCRC strives to develop sustainable solutions using appropriate science and technology interventions with key focus areas of Food, Energy and Environment for the Development (FEED) of rural India. To realize this goal, the Centre has been working on research programmes that focus on minimization of chemicals and water use in agriculture, effective utilization of bioresources including microbials and creating wealth from waste for development of eco-friendly products.
