About Providence College for Women (Autonomous)

Ever since its birth on that warm morning of July 1966, Providence College for Women, has endeavored to take giant strides of progress under the able leadership of the Management, committed Principals and their team of staff. The institution is manag and their team of staff. The institution is managed and run by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes, a Catholic minority institution registered under the Nilgiris St. Joseph's Sisters Society. The institution was started for the benefit of higher education of the young women and others of the locality and the Catholic community, in addition it opens wide its arms to others from far and wide without distinction of caste or creed. The College celebrated its Golden Jubilee during the year 2015-2016. Providence College nestles in a sprawling emerald green campus in the suburbs of the rustic town of Coonoor situated about six km, en route the Kotagiri-Coonoor Road way. The College also provides resident students with hostel facilities. The hostel is a place where they are cared for and loved and made to feel at home. The Society of the Sisters of St. Joseph’s of Tarbes was founded in the year 1843 in Tarbes, in France by six young peasant girls, who had a special experience of God which urged them to live ‘only for God and for others’. They became sensitive to the needs of the people around responded enthusiastically to the call to educate children, to care for the sick, poor and the needy and other forms of service according to the needs of the people without any discrimination. Under the leadership of Mother Marie Des Anges, the first Superior General who herself was an experienced, energetic, competent and exemplary educator, who started many schools.After establishing itself in European countries the institute spread out its wings to India and South America. The Indian province was started in the year 1882, in Bangalore. It is in 1900, St. Joseph’s Convent European school was started in Coonoor, Nilgiris. Providence college is an off-spring of St. Joseph’s Convent School, established in the year 1966 by Mother Marie Theresa, the then superior of St. Joseph’s Convent School, Coonoor for the continuity of the girls education in and around the Nilgiris, irrespective of caste and creed.
