About Physical Research Laboratory (PRL)

Known as the cradle of Space Sciences in India, the Physical Research Laboratory ( PRL ) was founded in 1947 by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. As a unit of Department of Space, Government of India, PRL carries out fundamental research in selected areas of Phys out fundamental research in selected areas of Physics, Space & Atmospheric Sciences, Astronomy, Astrophysics & Solar Physics, and Planetary & Geo-Sciences. The Laboratory was formally established on November 11, 1947, in the M. G. Science College, Ahmedabad, with support from the Karmkshetra Educational Foundation and the Ahmedabad Education Society. The initial focus was research on Cosmic Rays and the properties of the Upper Atmosphere. Research in Theoretical Physics and Radio Physics were added later with grants from the Atomic Energy Commission. PRL is located in the western part of Ahmedabad known as "Navrangpura". Many other premier Academic Institutions such as Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA), Space Applications Centre (SAC), Sardar Patel Institute of Administration (SPIPA), Ahmedabad Textile Industrial Research Association (ATIRA) and Gujarat University are also located in this region PRL is situated at a distance of about 8 km from Ahmedabad Railway Station (Kalupur) and journey by a three-wheeler (auto rickshaw) will cost around Rs. 100. Local buses (route 46, 47) also ply between the Railway Station and PRL and can take about an hour. The bus stand known as Kalupur Bus Stand is opposite to the Railway Station. The best landmark for reaching PRL is the Gujarat University Tower, which is adjacent to PRL.
