About Manipur University (MU)
Manipur University (Meitei: Manipur Taibang Maheikol) is a central university located in Imphal, Manipur, India. It was established on 5 June 1980, under the Manipur University Act, 1980 (Manipur Act 8 of 1980), as a teaching cum-affiliating universi 8 of 1980), as a teaching cum-affiliating university with territorial jurisdiction over the state of Manipur. It was converted into a central university under the Manipur University Act, 2005[3] w.e.f. 13 October 2005. The university is in Canchipur, about 7 km from Imphal, the capital city of the Indian state of Manipur. The campus is spread over 287 acres (1.16 km2) in historic Canchipur, the old palace of the kingdom of Manipur. The Manipur University, established under Manipur University Act,1980, came into existence on June 5, 1980. It became a Central University on October 13, 2005 under the Manipur University Act, 2005 passed by the Parliament. Today Manipur University has 9 School of Studies, 44 Departments, and 8 Centre of Studies. As per the report of 31st March 2023, University has a total student strength of around 6000. The University, accredited ‘A’ Grade by NAAC, has 119 affiliated Colleges including 2 Medical Colleges. Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT) under the School of Engineering is a constituent college of the University with 6 Departments. The main objectives of the University are: • To disseminate and advance knowledge by providing institutional support for learning and research facilities; • To make provisions for integrated course in humanities, natural and physical sciences, social sciences, human and environmental sciences, and other allied disciplines in the educational programmes; • To take appropriate measures for promoting innovations in teachinglearning process, inter-disciplinary studies, and research; • To educate and train the people for the development of the country in general and the Northeast Region of India in particular; • To pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of the State at large; • To enhance intellectual, academic, and cultural development; The campus is situated in the historic Canchipur endowed with cultural places like the Rasmandal where the famous Ras Lila was performed for the first time during the reign of Rajarshi Bhagyachandra, and the Langthabal Konung (Palace) where the Maharaja Gambhir Singh, who liberated Manipur from the Burmese occupation, took his last breath. It was also the birthplace of Dr. Lamabam Kamal Singh who wrote the heart-throbbing novel "Madhabi" and many other poems. The University has a campus of 287.53 acres cradled in scenic beauty.
