About VHS - MA Chidambaram College and School of Nursing (VHS-MACCON)
MAC Nursing Education has its roots in the Multipurpose Health Workers (Female) Course started in 1983 with the Voluntary Health Services Hospital as its base hospital. VHS-MACSON commenced its flagship 3½ year Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery co gship 3½ year Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery course in 2001. It is approved by the Tamilnadu Government and recognized by both the Tamilnadu Nurses and Midwives Council and the Indian Nursing Council. Each year, VHS-MACSON admits students to the diploma course from among higher secondary school pass-outs from recognized boards of India. VHS-MACSON diplomates form the first line of nursing support to the healthcare sector, often manning primary health centres, small hospitals and nursing homes, polyclinics and corporate hospitals across India. Some of them have found gainful employment in West Asia, Europe and in the United States. Some exceptional diplomates go on to study further and hone their nursing skills and knowledge to strengthen nursing academies. VHS-MACCON was started by the MAC (Educational) Foundation in 1991 to be an adjunct nursing talent incubator to the 465 bedded Voluntary Health Services Hospital. The college offers three popular courses - B.Sc. (Nursing) - 4 years, Post Basic B.Sc. (Nursing) - 3 years (IGNOU) and M.Sc. (Nursing) -2 years. MACCON is affiliated to the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University and is recognized by both the Tamilnadu Nurses and Midwives Council and the Indian Nursing Council. Graduates from the college are trained and professionally equipped to deliver quality nursing care to individuals, families and groups not only through institutions but also in homes and communities independently. These professional nurses also have the knowledge, capacity and encouragement to participate actively in nursing administration and teaching. Healthcare institutions throughout the world have shown a distinct preference for graduates and post-graduates from VHS-MACCON to populate important positions in their hospitals and academia.
