About Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans (LSU Health New Orleans)
The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans has teaching, research, and health care functions state-wide, through its six professional schools and eight Centers of Excellence, as well as the more than one hundred hospitals and o well as the more than one hundred hospitals and other health science related institutions throughout the State, Region, Nation, and the World, with which they maintain affiliations. The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans (LSU Health New Orleans) is a comprehensive academic health center with teaching, research, and health care missions that extend across Louisiana and beyond. It comprises six professional schools: Medicine (1931), Graduate Studies (1965), Dentistry (1966), Nursing (1968), Allied Health Professions (1970), and Public Health (2003). The center is affiliated with over one hundred hospitals and health science institutions globally, reflecting its broad impact in education and clinical care. LSU Health New Orleans also houses eight Centers of Excellence, including notable ones established in neuroscience (1989), alcohol and drug abuse (1991), cardiovascular health (1991), and cancer research—the Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center (1991). The institution maintains current accreditation status and is a vital force in biomedical and clinical advancement. Leadership has played a key role in its development, with a succession of chancellors guiding its growth since 1965. Dr. Steve Nelson currently serves as Chancellor. Previous leaders include Dr. Larry H. Hollier (2005–2021), Dr. Perry Gardner Rigby (1985–1994), and Dr. Allen Anthony Copping (1974–1985), among others.
