L. M. College Of Pharmacy, Ahmedabad (LMCP)

LMCP was established in 1947 by the philanthropic education trust “ Ahmedabad Education Society”. The various courses run by the institute in the field of pharmaceutical sciences are approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE he All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and the Pharmacy council of India (PCI). The institute is affiliated with Gujarat Technological University (GTU). The institute is recognized by University Grants Commission, New Delhi (UGC) under sections 2(f) and 12(B). In Gujarat, the need for pharmacy education was increasingly felt with the rapid growth of the state’s pharmaceutical sector. This led to discussions between Sardar Vallabhai Patel and Shri Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar, better known as Dadasaheb Mavlankar, who was the president of the Ahmedabad Education Society at that time. As a result of these talks, the Lallubhai Motilal College of Pharmacy (L. M. College of Pharmacy) was established in June 1946, supported by a donation given by Smt. Revabahen, wife of Sheth Lallubhai Motilal, and her sons Narsibhai, Ramanlal, and Ratanlal. The college started with a Bachelor of Pharmacy course and was affiliated with Bombay University. The college was built by M/S Gannon Dunkerly and Co. ltd, which constructed the L D Arts College, and M.G. Science Institute prior to LMCP. It started functioning from one of the wings of the M G Science institute and was shifted to the present premise in 1949. The Logo of the college was designed in 1947. The logo carries the famous mantra in Sanskrit ‘Sarve Santu Niramaya’. The literary meaning of which is Good health for All. The first batch of B. Pharm Students got their degree from Bombay University, and from the second batch onwards students got their degree from Gujarat University (GU) as the college got affiliated to Gujarat University which started in 1950. The GU instituted a master’s in pharmacy degree in 1952 and a Ph.D. degree in 1955. The diploma in pharmacy course was adopted by the GU in 1954 and the college started the course as per the PCI syllabus in 1955. The college started the M. Pharm degree courses in 1954 and Ph. D degree in 1957 The B. Pharm degree course in LMCP was of two and half year duration from 1947 to 1955, three years duration from 1955 to 1967, and four years duration from 1967 to 1978 as per All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) recommendations which continues still today. M. Pharm degree course was of two years duration from 1954 and was offered in four specializations, Pharmaceutical Technology and Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology, and Pharmacognosy. In earlier years pharmacy was a part of the medical faculty at Gujarat University. When I. A. Modi, the co-founder of Cadila Laboratories became a Senate Member of Gujarat University, he thought if pharmacy as a profession has to be developed it should be a separate faculty. Thus it was decided to separate pharmacy from medical faculty. Being the first full-fledged pharmacy college in Asia, LMCP steadily gained acclaim abroad and used to attract a number of foreign students till the 1970s. Nuns and people from East Africa, Uganda used to avail the reservation of seats by the Government of India. There were a number of South Indian Students in the Master’s Programme. Around 1995, the intake of foreign students stopped. For UG and Diploma courses, centrally reserved seats for foreign candidates continue to remain even now. The contribution of LMCP to the academic field both in India and abroad is significant and continues to increase year after year. The seeds were sown by Dr. R. P. Patel, who recognized the talented students and asked them to start as demonstrators or lecturers with the college. LMCP has played a significant role in the evolution of the Indian Pharmaceutical industry. The college has produced many successful entrepreneurs. Themis Pharmaceuticals, Wockhardt, Cadila Pharmaceuticals, Troikaa, Zandu, J B Chemicals, Lyca Pharmaceuticals, Astral, Paras Pharmaceuticals, Centurion, Mercury and Lincoln Pharmaceuticals, Vasu Pharmaceuticals, etc are some of the pharmaceutical industry run by alumni of LMCP. The college was blessed to have Principal like Dr. R. P Patel ( 1947-1964), Dr. C. S. Shah (1964-1978), Dr. (Miss) B.M. Trivedi (1978-1988), Dr. M. B. Devani(1988-1990), Dr. C. J. Shishoo (1990-1997), Dr. M. C. Gohel (1997-2011), Dr (Mrs.). A. A. Mehta I/C (2012-2014). The college is functioning under the expert leadership of Dr. M. T. Chhabria since 2014. LMCP was awarded an “A” grade by NAAC in the year 2007. The college is affiliated with Gujarat Technological University since 2008. There are more industry-academia collaborations happening since the year 2015. More numbers of MoUs are signed between LMCP and Pharmaceutical Industries like Zydus Cadila, Intas, etc. MoUs for research collaborations are signed between LMCP and various Universities like UKA TARSADIA, CHARUSAT, IIPH, etc. The college has been granted financial assistance from NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission to set up Atal Incubation Centre (AIC-LMCP Foundation) for sector-specific pharma and healthcare in the year 2017. ...view more
