About IIT Jammu (Indian Institute of Technology, Jammu)

IIT Jammu is recognized as an “Institute of National Importance” under the “Institutes of Technology Act” of 1961. IIT is an autonomous public higher education Institute funded by the Government of India, and functions under the governance of nt of India, and functions under the governance of the IIT Council. The plan to establish IIT Jammu, along with four other IITs in Chhattisgarh, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala, was announced by the Hon’ble Finance Minister in the Union Budget 2014-15. The Indian Institute of Technology Jammu was inaugurated on 6th August 2016, and welcomed the first batch of students into the campus in Paloura, Jammu. In the initial phases, the establishment of IIT Jammu was done under the mentorship of IIT Delhi. In 2018, IIT Jammu shifted its primary operations to the 400 acres of lush green land in Jagti village, just outside Jammu city, provided by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir for establishing its main campus. Currently, Phase 1A of the main campus, spread across 25 acres, is operational. Phase 1B and 1C are undergoing rapid construction. The main campus of the Institute is located on National Highway–44, 17 km from the Jammu Airport and 19 km from the Jammu Tawi Railway Station. The campus in Paloura now accommodates PhD scholars. It also houses the high-end research facility: Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF or SAPTARSHI Labs), equipped with highly sophisticated state-of-art instruments to enable researchers in basic sciences and engineering. Jammu city, the largest city in the Jammu Division and the winter capital of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, is situated on the banks of the Tawi river. It is a melting pot of cultures, religions, and ethnicities from all parts of the UTs of J&K and Ladakh and other northwestern states of India. It accommodates a romantic mix of heritage and progress, the old and the new, while providing opportunities for education and work for a diverse population. It is also surrounded by holy sites and mesmerizing sights, which the pilgrims/tourists find irresistible. Despite the confluence of cultures and people it has become home to, Jammu city retains its native cultural hue, past heritage, and distinct cuisine for the ones keen to explore and experience. Jammu city has been a centre of education for the UTs of J&K and Ladakh. Its temperate climate and politics have attracted youth from these parts for their education right from higher secondary levels and on to higher education opportunities offered by its various government schools and degree colleges, engineering colleges, and the University of Jammu. Universities like SKUAST-Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, have students from many parts of the nation pursuing various professional and other degrees. With the recent establishment of AIIMS Jammu, IIM Jammu, and IIT Jammu, the city is expanding and transforming to be a national hub of education in the northernmost part of the country.
