The Rising Sun with its rays of light represents the University and its many faculties of study. The Lotus is the seat of both the Goddess of Prosperity (Lakshmi) and the Goddess of Knowledge (Saraswathi) and it is opening at the break of dawn. The s thi) and it is opening at the break of dawn. The sun's rays are surmounted by the Swastika, the ancient symbol of benediction among the Aryans. The outer circle of the crest, with its sixty-four lotus petals, represents the AU Emblemsixty-four Arts & Sciences into which all knowledge was divided in the classical tradition of India. The ocean is the vast region of knowledge which the University should help its alumni to master. The light rays holding the benedictory Swastika bring into focus our great motto extracted from Upanishads, " Thejasvinavadhitamastu " , which means, " May the Divine Light Illuminate Our Studies ". Underneath this complex symbolism of knowledge is the crescent Moon, esteemed in all religions; the crescent is 'Kala' a digit of Moon, and 'Kala' also means Art of Applied Science or light and charm. Since the University bears the name of Andhra Viswa Kala Parishad, a corporation for the development of all Arts in Andhra; the crescent above the name be-speaks the light and charm and beauty of Andhra. The two Serpents or represent the seekers and custodians of wisdom, who imbibe it from the lotus petals. Tradition also traces back the Andhras to the ancient Nagas, who were worshippers of the Cobra and had it as their heraldic symbol. Andhra University was established in 1926 by the Madras University Act to serve the entire linguistic region of Andhra as a residential teaching-cumaffiliating multi-disciplinary university. The institution has Sir C.R. Reddy as its founder Vice-Chancellor and Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan as the second ViceChancellor. A sprawling campus of 425 acres dotted with 215 buildings, vast open spaces, a brilliant ecosystem with its rich biodiversity and magnificent Kailasa Hill as the backdrop with mystic blue of the Bay of Bengal in its front constitute a unique environment in a city such as Visakhapatnam. It has delivered high quality education to contribute to the national education mission and in many ways, and has remained a part in the framework to strengthen the country as a nation. Successful alumni, research outcome of this university were the social model for unity of the society and a factor for growth and development of India. The university has the distinction of having five Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awardees, two Padma Vibhushan Awardees, one Padma Bhushan Awardee, five Padma Shri Awardees with the recent addition of two in 2023, amongst its alumni. Nobel laureate Sir C.V. Raman was closely associated with laying research foundations in Physics, and Prof. C.R.Rao, world renowned statistician, Dr. Neeli Bendapudi, President of Penn State University, Dr G.M.Rao, Chairman GMR group, Justice Jasti Chalameswar, former Judge, Hon. Supreme Court of India, Dr Prabha Atreya Director , FDA, USA, and Suggu P Rao, Vice Chairman, Bank of America, were among the proud alumnus of AU. The University has distinguished itself by starting many programs which are innovative and first of their kind in higher education system of India. Since its establishment in 1926, Andhra University follows its noble vision and mission as inscribed in the logo, “ThejasvinaVadhitamastu ", which means," May the Divine Light Illuminate Our Studies”. At present, 58 departments, 16 specialized research centres, 188 ICT enabled classrooms, state -of the-art of computer and GIS laboratories,76 seminar halls on campus will give the students ample learning opportunities as it is critically related to the University’s objective.
