The post graduate Department of Psychology was established in 1959 with Major S. Parthasarathy as its founder head. Even before starting the department, since the inception of University College in 1954, psychology was taught at B.A. (Hons) and M.A. 54, psychology was taught at B.A. (Hons) and M.A. (Philosophy) level. The Department of Psychology offering the specializations like Health Psychology, Organizational behavior, Rehabilitation Psychology, Aging and Counselling Psychology. Students are exposed to practical and project work in addition to field studies. The department earned UGC-SAP (1990-1995) in the thrust area of life span developmental psychology with an emphasis on aging & DRS-I 2011-2016 & II 2017-2022) with special emphasis on Health and Aging. The department successfully completed 33 projects funded by UGC, ICSSR, ICMR and in collaboration with foreign agencies like ESRC, UK. The department conducted 4 exhibitions in 1961, 1967, 1977 and 1986 to popularize the strength and importance of the Psychology Department. The department successfully organized many international and national conferences. The Department has a Counselling Center to cater the needs of the students and public in general. 187 students have obtained their Ph.D., Degree and the department has published 598 articles in national and international journals. ...view more
