About Department of Botany, K. J. Somaiya college of Arts and Commerce
Welcome to the Department of Botany. It gives me immense pleasure to lead this Department. Our college is one of the best institutions among colleges in Ahmednagar District and honored with ‘A’ grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Counc ade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore. The Department having begun with the beginning of Science Faculty in 1992-93 by the idea and inspiration of Ex.MLA Hon.K.B.Rohamare Saheb, founder Chairman, Kopargaon Taluka Education Society, Kopargaon. Department was started as general subject since 1992-93. Due to students demand Botany as special subject at T. Y. B. Sc. was started from academic year 2014-15. Academic excellence and over increasing demand from UG students, department started post graduate programme M. Sc.Botany from academic year 2020-21. Department conducting Govt. of Maharashtra approved a certificate course in ‘Mushroom Cultivation’ and UGC approved ‘Fruit processing’. Currently it has 08 faculty members and 03 non-teaching staff. The Department has excellent infrastructure such as well-equipped five laboratories out of which four laboratories are exclusively for under graduate and post graduate students and one for the in vitro plant tissue culture. All the modern instruments purchased out of grants provided by Management, UGC, DST-FIST and Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. Department of Botany is working very hard towards the goal of providing modern and skill-oriented education to the students to achieve academic excellence in field of Botany and to provide the research scholars in the service of Nation. The prime motive of our department is to provide quality education as well as developing the scientific temperament among the students. Teaching faculty of the best kind ensuring quality education such as interaction among students, parents and staff. The Botanical excursions are organized by department for Kalsubai -Harishchandra Gadh, Bhimashankar Sanctuary, Mahabaleshwar forest in view to study the wild plant diversity, forest ecosystem and study visits are arranged at Mahatma Phule Agriculture University, Rahuri to inculcate the research knowledge to the students about medicinal, horticultural plants, fruit processing and Biofertilizers. Botanical Garden has maintained by department for ex situ conservation of some rare and endangered, medicinal plants collected from Western Ghats of Maharashtra.
