The University Department of Biotechnology was established in 1995. It offers postgraduate Degree and Doctoral Degree in Biotechnology. Now the Department is provided with all basic and essential laboratory facilities for carrying out doctoral resear ratory facilities for carrying out doctoral research programs in modern areas of Biotechnology. The department has an extension wing on Bacteriology quality drinking water-testing and training center facility. The department started to initiate Biotechnology education as program to generate trained manpower to meet the industry's demand. The course curriculum of PG program in Biotechnology and Doctoral Research programs are meticulously designed to impart practical oriented training in all areas of Biotechnology as required by the biotechnology industry. The department is engaged on both basic and applied aspects of Biotechnology Research. The department as a part of its extension activities does Microbial quality analysis of drinking water and food materials for the needy persons and groups and also conduct short term training in microbial analysis as well as in other related biotechnological and biochemical techniques. The department also undertake project training of students - PG, M.Phil and PhD students from other departments, colleges and Institutes. The Department has established an Inter University Centre for Genomics and Gene Technology, an initiative of the Department of Higher Education, Govt. of Kerala. The Centre is functioning as platform for the research and academic interaction of researchers and students of Biotechnology.
