About Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE)

Delhi Board of School Education will redefine the school education for the learners of 21st century. It will not just be conducting examinations but become a partner in learning for our students. Attempts to address the lacuna in our education syste empts to address the lacuna in our education system have primarily focused on more budget from governments, infrastructure/ facilities, quality teachers training, and curriculum and syllabus. However, little to no impetus has been laid upon overhauling the face of assessments, which arguably is a key pillar of the modern-day education system. The traditional approach indicates that the examination system has collapsed the education system. Students are graded "Pass or Fail" rather than being assessed for their skills and weaknesses. They create an education system that puts most students behind, and they learn nothing. Assessments' impact on education has been repeatedly emphasised. The Kothari Commission (1964–66) stated: “Examination at the elementary level should encourage learners to enhance their success in the fundamental abilities and establish the proper habits and attitudes.” The National Education Policy (2020) states, “The major objective of the assessment will truly be for learning; it will allow the teacher and student, and the whole schooling system, continually adjust teaching-learning processes to enhance learning and development for all students.” With this context and the overarching aim to expedite the education revolution, the Delhi Government established the Delhi Board of School Education. Assessment in DBSE is part of the learning process rather than a separate step that is used to judge and classify students. In DBSE, classroom assessments are embedded in pedagogy and focus on future-ready skills and knowledge. Assessments of both the procedures and the outcomes of students' learning activities allow for: Holistic Evaluation: A multifaceted assessment structure ensures that students are evaluated in multiple ways, which provides a more holistic evaluation of their knowledge and skills. This approach takes into account not only the student's knowledge of the subject matter but also their skills related to each discipline. Fairness and Objectivity: With multiple assessments, the evaluation process becomes fairer and more objective. It minimizes the impact of any biases or errors that may arise from a single form of assessment. Better Feedback: Multiple assessments allow teachers to provide more detailed and specific feedback to students, helping them identify their strengths and weaknesses and providing guidance. DBSE assessment structure can help reduce stress for students as they no longer have to depend on a single test or exam to demonstrate their understanding of a subject. It also reduces the workload of teachers as they can spread out assessments throughout the year. Preparedness for the Future: With assessments “for and as learning”, schools are preparing students for the future, where they will need to have a range of skills and abilities to succeed. This approach helps students develop a broader skill set that will be valuable in both academic and professional settings
