About Carnegie Mellon University’s Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Carnegie Mellon University’s Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences is not an ordinary liberal arts school. From creative writing and neuroscience to behavioral economics and bioethics, the Dietrich College is home to eleven departments the Dietrich College is home to eleven departments and programs as well as research centers that often cross disciplines, allowing our world-class faculty and students to investigate and solve real-world problems. The Dietrich College General Education program encompasses a set of requirements that provide a core foundation and knowledge for all students across the College, regardless of their primary major. In the Fall of 2021, we launched a new General Education program that will be required for all students entering in Fall 2021 and beyond. We created the Humanities@CMU Initiative in 2019, following a town hall organized and attended by students, faculty and university leadership. The initiative aims to strengthen Dietrich College’s exceptional humanities research and education and bring them to a broader audience. We seek to support a new generation of humanities work that engages in far-reaching partnerships not only with artists but also data scientists, computer scientists, psychologists and economists. Students are our inspiration and our collaborators. The Humanities@CMU is creating new academic programs for the humanities student of the 21st century and invites them to participate in relevant and impactful research projects.
