About Calcutta Mathematical Society

Calcutta Mathematical Society was founded on September 6, 1908 by a stellar team comprising of Founder President - Sir Asutosh Mookerjee, the then Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University Founder Vice President - Sir Gurudas Banerjee, the first r Vice President - Sir Gurudas Banerjee, the first Indian Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University Founder Vice Presidents - Prof. C. E. Cullis and Prof. Gauri Sankar Dey Founder Secretary - Prof. Phanindra Lal Ganguly and 90 other founding members. The Society is located at Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) in the state of West Bengal, India. Kolkata is a unique city. Having been the cradle of the Indian Renaissance and the seminary, the journey of Higher Education in modern India began from Kolkata. It is the home of many great Indians. Nobel Laureates Ronald Ross, C. V. Raman, Mother Teresa and Amartya Sen were all closely associated with the rich heritage and tradition of Kolkata. Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the literary wizard, and Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, founder of the Indian Statistical Institute, were also from Kolkata. The Society's association with legends like Albert Einstein, S. Chandrasekhar and Abdus Salam bears an eloquent testimony to the height of its excellence in the world of Mathematical Sciences. All along, the Calcutta Mathematical Society has been able to create a distinct impression in the mind of the elite of the society, and we hope it will continue to do so forever. The main objectives of the Calcutta Mathematical Society comprise of but are not limited to the following. To encourage and promote mathematical study and research. To improve mathematical studies. To write, compile and publish journals, books and reports in mathematical sciences. To assist, subscribe to or cooperate with any other society, having objectives similar to itself. To establish a forum for the research workers and teachers of mathematics for exchange of ideas through regular periodic meetings. To maintain a library with books and journals to cater the needs of teachers and research workers. To publish research works of mathematicians of India and abroad. To invite outstanding scholars to deliver memoirs and special lectures on their own contributions, and review of modern topics. To organize independently or jointly with similar institutions seminars/symposia/workshops on different fields of pure and applied mathematics. To hold periodic meetings and discussion towards the improvement of teaching of mathematics and subjects of popular interest. "The Officers of the Society shall be chosen out of the Members and shall consist of a President, five Vice-Presidents, a Treasurer, a Secretary, an Editorial Secretary, and an Assistant Secretary. The President, Vice-Presidents, Treasurer, Secretaries with as many other Members as shall make a total of twenty-two (including the Assistant Secretary, if any) shall constitute a Council for the management and direction of the affairs of the Society."
