Baptist Health South Florida is a faith-based not-for-profit healthcare organization and clinical care network in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. Baptist Health has 11 hospitals and more than 100 physician practices and outpatient facil than 100 physician practices and outpatient facilities. The organization was founded in 1960 and is headquartered in Coral Gables, Florida. It began as a single hospital on North Kendall Drive in suburban Miami and is now the second-largest employer in the State of Florida, with approximately 23,000 employees. In 2015, Baptist Health reported $2.4 billion in revenues, held $3 billion in financial reserves, and provided $302 million in community benefit and charity care. Brian Keeley has served as CEO since 1995. In 2016, Baptist Health launched "Baptist Health Care On Demand," a telemedicine service connecting patients with physicians via live video for non-emergency care, available 24/7. In 2015, the organization began construction on the $485 million Miami Cancer Institute, which has an affiliation with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. It is also the parent of several subsidiaries, including AmSurg Baptist Network Alliance, which acquired a majority stake in Northpoint Surgery Center in 2016. That same year, Baptist Health South Florida recorded 75,440 patient admissions, 346,093 emergency department visits, and 289,907 urgent care visits. Baptist Health South Florida actively supports the community through wellness and health programs, free outreach initiatives, annual health symposiums, and the Baptist Scholars program, which provides tuition assistance for individuals training as registered nurses within its system. The organization also maintains robust internal programs aimed at supporting employee health and wellness. In 2019 and 2020, People magazine recognized Baptist Health as one of the “50 Companies That Care.” Additionally, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) awarded the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Baptist Hospital a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence. As of 2023, Baptist Health South Florida's hospital network includes Baptist Hospital of Miami, Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Baptist Health Hospital Doral, Bethesda Hospital East, Bethesda Hospital West, Doctors Hospital, Homestead Hospital, South Miami Hospital, West Kendall Baptist Hospital, Mariners Hospital, and Fishermen's Hospital. These facilities are located across Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach counties. Violations and Settlements: The U.S. Department of Justice, representing the Office of Inspector General, reached a $7,775,000 settlement with Baptist Health after it admitted to violations of the federal physician self-referral law, known as the Stark Law. In a separate case from December 2016, South Miami Hospital, one of its affiliates, paid $12 million to settle Medicare fraud charges. 2021 Fundraising Practices: During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, Baptist Health South Florida's fundraising foundation faced criticism for sending vaccine-related emails to 3,000 wealthy donors. The emails stated that individuals making six-figure financial contributions would be eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccinations at a time when vaccines were in limited supply.
