About Asian Association on Remote Sensing (AARS)
Asian Association on Remote Sensing or AARS is a non-governmental organization established in 1981 to promote remote sensing in the Asia-Pacific region; it currently has members from 29 countries. "Realizing the importance of remote sensing technolo ealizing the importance of remote sensing technology in national development activities, representatives of Asian countries present in Costa Rica at the International Symposium on Remote Sensing in April 1980, met and exchanges ideas on forming an association on remote sensing in Asia. In the spirit of mutual cooperation, the First Asian Conference on Remote Sensing was held in Bangkok, Thailand in November, 1980 and the Second Conference in Beijing, China in October - November 1981. At the Beijing Conference the representatives of the Asian countries met and decided to form an association." "The Association is for the promotion of remote sensing through the exchange of information, mutual cooperation, international understanding and goodwill amongst the members." "The principal activity of the Association shall be to hold the Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS). The Association may also conduct other remote sensing activities consistent with its aims. "ACRS shall be held each year within the period from October to December except a special case which is approved by the General Conference." According to the Article 6 of the statutes of the AARS, there are three types of memberships. Any non-Asian country or organization interested in the Association may join the Association as an associate member.
