All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Madurai (AIIMS Madurai) is an Public hospital and Medical school it located at Thoppur near Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. AIIMS Madurai was Announced in 2015 and the institute established in 2021. The yearly the institute established in 2021. The yearly MBBS intake is 50 by the AIIMS Madurai-run medical college and selection is done through NEET(UG).[1] The AIIMS was officially announced on 28 February 2015, in the budget speech for 2015–16, where the Minister of Finance Arun Jaitley announced five more AIIMS, in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Assam and Tamil Nadu and an "AIIMS-like" institute in Bihar.[2] Tamil Nadu had proposed five sites to set up an AIIMS. Besides Thoppur, Sengipatti (Thanjavur), Pudukottai town, Chengalpattu (Kanchipuram) and Perundurai (Erode) were considered.[3] In 2018, the union cabinet gave an official approval for the location, on a 222-acre lot in the Thoppur, near Madurai.[3][4][5] By January 2019, the boundary wall of AIIMS Madurai campus was completed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of AIIMS Madurai in January 2019.[6] The state government handed over the land to the Government of India in February 2020.[1] In March 2021, the funding agency, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), extended assistance. The loan agreement was signed in February 2022.[7] The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) informed Minister for Health and Family Welfare of Tamil Nadu Ma. Subramanian in February 2023 that the construction of AIIMS Madurai would begin by the end of 2024 and be completed by 2028.[8] Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) can trace its origins to the ‘Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry’ established by the French Government in 1823. In 1956 foundation for new medical college was laid and in 1964, hospital was inaugurated. JIPMER became an institution of national importance under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India in the year 2008. It is an institution established for teaching, research and patient care in the area of health. JIPMER spreads over 192 acres. The institution houses one administrative block, one academic centre, one nursing college, seven hospital blocks, seven accessory services buildings and four residential complexes. 12 broad types of medical, nursing and allied health science courses covering all disciplines in healthcare from basic to super speciality training are conducted. JIPMER is one among the very few institutions in the country which is providing teaching from undergraduate to superspeciality & sub-specialties, conducting path breaking research and providing specialty care of high order. The model of providing free specialty health care while maintaining quality and safety makes JIPMER a unique model in the country. JIPMER’s success in providing best treatment even to the least affordable in the society makes it a model of speciality care delivery of the future. JIPMER continues to rank among the top best five medical schools in the country. JIPMER is witnessing expansion in the form of new campuses like JIPMER Karaikkal, JIPMER outreach centre at Yanam apart from the soon to be commissioned screening OPD block and super specialty extension block. Conceptual plans for Puducherry second campus for Institute of organ transplantation and Institute of advanced trauma and rehabilitation were initiated during this period.
