ea of setting up such a University was conceived in 1998 and the seed of its inception was laid down by Prof. H.L. Trivedi, the Founding Director of Smt. Gulabben Rasiklal Doshi and Smt. Kamlaben Mafatlal Mehta Institute of Kidney Diseases & Research Centre - Dr. H.L. Trivedi Institute of Transplantation Sciences (IKDRC-ITS), Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The idea received whole hearted support from Hon.’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat Smt. Anandiben Patel, a teacher at heart and other government officials. The bill was passed unanimously on 25th March 2015 in Gujarat Legislative Assembly. The Act was signed by H.E. Governor of Gujarat Shri O.P. Kohliji on 6th April and was published in Gujarat Government Gazette on 7th April 2015. The notification was issued by Department of Health and Family Welfare on 29th April, 2015 and it started functioning from 1st May, ’15, the day on which Gujarat State was born. GUTS is a non-affiliating University and will have its constituent, recognized or approved colleges or schools in future.
The Objects of the University is to disseminate, create and preserve knowledge and understanding by teaching, research, extension and service and by effective demonstration in the field of Transplantation and allied sciences. This university will provide efficient and responsive administration, scientific management and develop organization of teaching and research. It will be a centre of excellence for providing medical care, educational and research facilities of high order in the field of Transplantation and allied Sciences in the existing super-specialties and such other super-specialties as may develop in future, including cell and tissue transplantation, solid organ transplantation, composite tissue transplantation, xeno transplantation, cell, tissue and bio-engineering, genetics and translational research in humans, animals, micro-organisms and viruses. The other objective will also be to attain the highest standards of academic excellence by providing the necessary physical infrastructure and creating an intellectual environment conducive to free flow of ideas and meaningful exchange of information and knowledge with other foreign and national universities or institutions. The mission of the University is to serve as an academic and research nucleus to these specialties to improve the clinical, scientific, and social aspects of transplantation making it accessible and affordable to population at large giving them healthy and productive lives.
The main objective of the University is to provide efficient and responsive administration, scientific management and organization of teaching and research programs in the areas related to Transplantation and Allied sciences. It will provide a multidisciplinary environment for transplantation professionals to promote and unite basic and clinical research so as to find solutions to the field's most challenging problems, such as immune tolerance, the critically short supply of donor organs, safer immunosuppression, organ preservation, and the mechanisms of rejection. It will strive to be a Centre of excellence for providing medical care, educational and research facilities of high order in the existing super-specialties and such other super-specialties as may develop in future, including cell and tissue transplantation, solid organ transplantation, composite tissue transplantation, xeno transplantation, cell, tissue and bio-engineering, genetics and translational research in humans, animals, micro-organisms and viruses. It will also establish and maintain Training or Educational Centers, Research and Experimental Centers and undertake extension activities and programmes of training through such centers as may be required in various parts of the State.
