Federal College of Education (formerly ATC/ABU) Kano, started from a very humble beginning in 1961 as Kano Men’s Training College at the Native/Authority loaned premises of Gwale Senior Primary School before it moved to its permanent site in 1965. ol before it moved to its permanent site in 1965. The college was established through the joint efforts of the United State Agency for International Aid (USAID) and the Ministry of Education of the then Northern Region under the distinguished leadership of Late Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sakkwato. The five year teacher training course began in January 1962 with an intake of 121 post primary students. Exactly a year later, the name of the College changed from Kano Men’s Training College to Kano Teachers College. In 1965, the Nigeria Certificate in Education Programme was introduced in the College. This was based on the recommendations of the Ashby Commisssion (1960). With the commencement of the N.C.E. Programme, the name of the College became Advanced Teachers College Kano. Construction work on the present site of the College and its staff quarters in Nasarawa began in 1963. The Welse Construction Company that won the contract handed over the building to the Nothern Nigeria Government on January 17, 1967. The NCE section moved in, in May of the same year while the Grade II section followed in September. In 1966 there was a change in government at the centre which brought out a breaking up in the regions. This national development led to the change of proprietorship of the College. In 1968 therefore, the Interim Common Service Agency (ICSA) took over the proprietorship of the College from the Nothern Nigerian Government. In January 1970 however, ICSA itself relinquished the ownership of the college to the Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. ICSA folded up later in April 1970. As a result of the transfer of ownership to Ahmadu Bello University (A.B.U) Zaria the name of the college was amended to reflect the name of the new proprietor of the college In 1990, the Federal Government took over the college with the promulgation of Decree Number 4 of 1986. With this development, the name of the college once again and finally change to its present name, The Federal College of Education, Kano. The College has achieved autonomy in the running of the Pre-NCE, Remedial Certificate, Diploma and NCE Courses. The degree programmes are run in affiliation to A.B.U. Zaria
