Faculty of Family and Community Sciences(FFCS), The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda(MSUB)

The seeds for this Faculty were sown when the former Baroda State Government created on the 17th December 1948 a Women's Education Trust Fund to establish a Home Science College in Baroda. The Trustees handed over this Educational Fund to the newly e s handed over this Educational Fund to the newly established The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda for constructing a building for the Faculty of Home Science. On 3rd July, 1950 was established the Faculty of Home Science. Evolving from its humble beginnings, the faculty has made conscious efforts towards redefining and broadening its view in response to the rapidly changing national and global scenario. There has been introduction of several new courses, modification of the syllabus and curriculum as per the changing demands of the society and industry. Rechristened as the ‘Faculty of Family and Community Sciences’ in 2007, it has today evolved into a premier institute including dynamic fields of studies. As an applied social science discipline grounded in the philosophy of ensuring individual, familial and social well-being, the Faculty is well-poised to implement various recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP-2020) like innovative multidisciplinary programs, blended pedagogy, multiple entry-exit options and the promotion of sustainable development goals. We at the Faculty are constantly revisiting our curriculum, research areas and innovations for promoting and achieving goals according to the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 . Some areas which have been included in the curriculum are – Interdisciplinary studies with emphasis on environmental issues, skill development and self-employment, research in indigenous practices and traditional knowledge, consumer advocacy and protection, development of career oriented courses, empowerment of women and emphasis on gender equality, quality of life, health and nutrition. The faculty comprises of five major fields of specialization and a General Level Program. These are Clothing and Textiles Extension and Communication Family and Community Resource Management Foods and Nutrition Human Development and Family Studies The faculty offers 11 Undergraduate B.Sc Honours programmes and one general pass course, 8 postgraduate degree programs with research, 4 PG Diplomas and a doctoral degree in all 5 subject areas. In the year 2013 was established the Institute of Fashion Technology which offers three undergraduate B.Sc(FT) Honours programmes and a PG diploma. The faculty also houses the Women’s Studies Research Centre (WSRC) that is engaged in promoting dialogues about gender equity in society through multifaceted research, training and documentation. Programs at the Faculty offer a judicious mix of theoretical and practical knowledge. Some of the defining features of the Faculty of Family and Community Sciences is its professional culture, vibrant teaching-learning ethos, engagement with issues of social relevance, and intrinsic motivation to excel. With able guidance from well-qualified faculty, students are encouraged to become progressive thinkers, evolving into effective and resourceful professionals in different fields. A variety of career options are available spanning the domains of teaching, research, consultancies and involvement in non-government and government organizations, at both national and international levels. A degree in Faculty of Family and Community Sciences also opens up new avenues for professional jobs in various fields such as Food Industries, Public Health and Dietetics, Craft sector, Textile and Fashion Industries, Hospitality sector, Interior Design, Communication, Journalism and Education, Early Childhood Education, Counsellors and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of Public Sector.
