Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), (Beṅgaḷūru Vaidyakīya Mahāvidyālaya mattu Sanśōdhanā Sansthé) formerly Bangalore Medical College (BMC), is a medical college in Bangalore, India run by the Government of Karnataka.
ngalore, India run by the Government of Karnataka. It is on K.R. Road, near City Market. It is one of ten government medical colleges in Karnataka. BMCRI is an autonomous institution under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Jayanagar, Bangalore.
It was established in 1955 by Dr. Shivram and Dr. Mohammed Shafi Mekhri in what was then the fort police station ground. It was built by civil engineer and architect, Mr. V. Ramamoorthy, who built it in a record time of 6 months. The college was initially run by the Mysore Medical Education Society and was later handed over to the Government of Karnataka in 1956 and was affiliated to Bangalore University. After the formation of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences BMC was affiliated to the new university in 1997.
It celebrated its golden jubilee in 2005–2006 with major renovation and the inauguration of a state-of-the-art digital library and Basavarajendra Auditorium. In 2006, the college was granted autonomous status by the Government of Karnataka.[2] The college is presently undergoing major renovation along the lines of AIIMS.
Victoria Hospital, inaugurated on 8 December 1900 by Lord Curzon the then Viceroy of India, started as a health centre with 140 bed strength, is now the second largest Hospital in India accommodating more than 1000 patients at a time. The facilities available includes departments of Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiology and Radiotherapy, physiotherapy, Forensic Medicine super specialities include Plastic Surgery, Surgical and Medical Gastro Enterology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Cardiology and Urology
The Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute was started as a private Medical School in the year 1955 by Mysore Education Society. The Founders of this Society were Dr. R. Shivaram, Dr.Mekhri, Dr. B.K. Narayana Rao and Dr. B.V. Ramaswamy. It was handed over to the then Government of Mysore in the year 1957 with affiliation to Mysore University, subsequently to Bangalore University. Presently, it is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences since 1996.
Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute has MCI recognition for Undergraduate 250 students, 280 Postgraduate students, {MS Anatomy, MD Physiology, MD Biochemistry, MD Pharmacology, MD Pathology, MD Microbiology, MD P & SM, MD Forensic Medicine, MS Ophthalmology, MS ENT, MS Orthopaedics, MD Anaesthesiology, MD Paediatrics, MD Gen. Medicine, MD Gen. The institution offers Bachelors’ degree in Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, diploma and certificate courses in Para-medical streams.

These hospitals cater to the health services to a majority of Bangalore Urban and Rural districts. It is also referral centre for the entire state. The hospitals have facilities to manage a wide range of medical and surgical conditions and has well –equipped laboratories that supports the hospital round the clock. The Institute is also involved in community health services at the Urban Family Welfare centre, Siddaiah road and Primary health centres at Sondekoppa, K G Halli, Hesarghatta and Pavagada. It also runs various central government and state government schemes to provide the best health care services to the needy population.
