A. D. Sheth Department of journalism and Mass Communication, Saurashtra University Rajkot

The A. D. Sheth Department of journalism and Mass Communication was established in 1973, becoming the first university department in Gujarat to impart education in journalism and mass Communications. Initially, it was funded by the "Saurashtra Trust" Initially, it was funded by the "Saurashtra Trust" to mark the Golden Jubilee celebration of Fulchhab, This department has named, a great journalist and founder of ‘Saurashtra Trust’, Shri Amritlal D. Sheth. Over the years, more than 1200 students have received their degrees and diplomas from the Department out of which almost 80 % are presently employed in reputed print and electronic media firms all over Gujarat and outside. The Department offers a one year(2 semesters) P.G.Diploma in Mass Communication P.G.D.M.C. with an intake of 40. It also offers a one year Master course in Journalism & Mass Communication M.J.M.C. (2 semester) with an intake of 40. Presently, 8 research scholars are working for their doctoral degree in the Department and 15 have been awarded their Ph. D.s till date. The department is infra-structurally sound with facilities for seminars, audio-visual teaching aids, a well equipped studio & editing room, an audio-visual room for screening, a computer lab and a news room. Every year the student of PGDMC publish a special magazine named ‘Lakshyvedh’ and students of MJMC make Short Films & documentaries as a Part of their curriculum. The students are made aware of the numerous job opportunities not only with the media but as Public Relations and Corporate communications officers in various public and private sector enterprises. The Department also motivates its students to pursue research in journalism and mass communication and thereby contribute to the academics of this field. It has two highly motivated and competent full-time faculties besides two adhoc lecturers. Moreover, it also draws in experts from government and private print as well as electronic media as visiting faculties. Some of them are its own alumni. Along with the existing curriculum it plans to focus more on Digital Media as a major thrust area of study in the near future. Department has received 6th Innovative B school Award in 2014 for leadership which is given by DNA & star group of industries, MUMBAI.
