Abstract
The onset of urbanization has brought about the rapid growth of population in metropolitan cities. Due to the increasing population density, the demand for housing has also increased. The construction of housing using conventional methods is a time-consuming process which has a negative impact on the environment and is costly. The high cost of land in these areas only adds to this issue. As a result, slums with overcrowded and unhygienic living conditions are very commonly seen in these urban cities. The construction of high-rise mass housing to rehabilitate the people in a faster and cheaper way is essential to raise their living standards. This paper discusses modular construction technology as a means to provide the population with mass housing which is low cost, sustainable, and durable high-rise structures with minimum construction waste and pollution. Further, the challenges faced by the architects while designing these structures and residents after its occupation are also taken into consideration. The aim of this research is to highlight modular construction as a more efficient alternative to conventional construction and the significance of introducing these new technologies in the construction of mass housing.
