Abstract

Fast disintegrating/dissolving drug delivery system offers a solution for those patients having difficulty in swallowing tablets, capsules, etc. Cefadroxil is a cephalosporin antimicrobial agent acting by inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis including gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. The poor aqueous solubility of the drug results in variable dissolution rate and, hence, poor bioavailability. Therefore, in the present study, an attempt has been made to prepare fast disintegrating tablets (FDT) of the drug by using various disintegrants by direct compression technique. The prepared tablets were evaluated for hardness, friability, weight variation, disintegration time and invitro dissolution studies. All the formulations showed disintegration time less than 100 seconds. Among the three (Isapgul, Sodium starch glycolate and Starch), disintegrant Isapgul showed the least disintegration time of 23 seconds at 9% w/v. concentration. Finally, it can be concluded that naturally available Isapgul can be used for formulation of FDT as it showed good disintegrating properties compared to semisynthetic disintegrant like Sodium Starch Glycolate (SSG).
