Abstract

The goal of pharmacotherapeutics is to achieve an effective drug concentration at the targeted site of action for the desired time. Ophthalmic drug delivery is one of the most interesting and challenging for the pharmaceutical scientist. The ocular inserts represent a significant advancement in the therapy of eye disease. The use of ocular inserts, which are the solid device to be placed on the cornea, represents one of the possibilities to reach increased residence time and to improve ocular drug bioavailability. Newer research in ophthalmic drug delivery systems is directed towards a combination of several drug delivery technologies, which includes developing a system which is not only prolonged the contact time of the vehicle at the ocular surface but which at the same time slow down the elimination of the drug. In this review, we have focused on the mechanism of action, classification, advantages, and disadvantages of ocular inserts. The present review is an attempt to present brief info about ocular inserts. Keywords: Ocular inserts, bioavailability, ophthalmic drug delivery system, ocular insert devices
