Abstract
Provides background and analysis for two papers which illuminate properties of the breast-cancer susceptibility genes BRCA1 and BRCA2. The emphasis of the important conceptual and practical difference between gatekeeper and caretaker genes; The defining of the biochemical and biological functions that are relevant to tumorigenesis; The paper by Milner and others and Sharan and others in the April 24, 1997 issue of `Nature.'
