Development of polymeric wound dressing material for tissue injury application
Wound healing is a complex and dynamic process, with the wound environment changing with the shifting health status of an individual. Sometimes micro -organisms (particularly bacteria) multiply, invading and damaging tissues, delaying healing and occasionally causing systemic illness. So it is necessary to protect the wound from microbial infection. Iron is a vital element require by all living organisms for many cellular processes such as electron transport chain and as a cofactor for many enzymes. Microorganisms growing under aerobic conditions need iron for a variety of functions including reduction of oxygen for the synthesis of ATP, for formation of haeme and for other essential purposes. Siderophores are small, high -affinity iron -chelating compounds secreted by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and grasses. Siderophores are amongst the strongest soluble Fe3+ binding agents known. When wound dressing materials fabricated with Siderophores will bind th e surrounding iron content in the wound and make them unavailable to the microorganism. So that it will hinder and seal the growth of microorganisms in the wound and aids in the wound healing.
