Overall the study confirms that the level of violence experienced was high and pervasive cutting across all socio-economic groups, education levels and regions in Coimbatore district, especially among women in rural slums. Women are constantly facing violence in the form of physical, psychological and economic for long time in their marital house but still don’t ask for support. The basic reason is socio-cultural and economic practices, illiteracy and ignorance, about rights and remedies. The other reasons for not reporting of domestic violence are fear of being socially isolated and fear of more violence, lack of alternative means of economic support. Living in a violent relationship affects a woman’s sense of self-esteem and her ability to participate in the society. This would suggest that women experiencing violence do face a very significant monetary drain, which has ripple effects on those around her who often provide the financial support to meet these costs. Hence there is an urgent need to strengthen the existing policies and programmes to reduce the prevalence of violence against women.
