Dr. John Lauriello is an internationally recognized psychiatrist and medical educator whose career has spanned several decades of leadership in psychiatry, clinical research, and behavioral health systems. He currently serves as the Daniel Lieberman Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Thomas Jefferson University and as the Senior Vice President of Behavioral Health at Jefferson Health. A specialist in schizophrenia and psychotic disorders, Dr. Lauriello has made substantial contributions to improving the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with serious mental illness.
Before joining Jefferson in 2019, Dr. Lauriello chaired the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Missouri, where he led major expansions, including the transformation of the University of Missouri Psychiatric Center into a state-of-the-art center of excellence for psychiatric care in the Mid-Missouri region. His prior training includes a BA from Yale University, an MD from Temple University School of Medicine, and residency at New York-Presbyterian’s Payne Whitney Clinic. He further specialized with fellowships in clinical psychopharmacology and psychobiology at Stanford University and the University of California, San Diego.
Dr. Lauriello’s research focuses on schizophrenia, particularly first-episode psychosis and the use of long-acting injectable antipsychotics. He is the author or co-author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications and regularly presents at national and international psychiatry conferences. His recent work includes studies on brain glutamate variability in schizophrenia, inflammation and relapse, sublingual dexmedetomidine for agitation, and real-world cost effectiveness of LAI antipsychotics.
Highly respected in his field, Dr. Lauriello has received numerous honors, including being named one of the Best Doctors in America® from 1998 to 2020. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and an elected member of the American College of Psychiatrists. He has also received multiple awards for teaching, research, and leadership, such as the Drs. M. Page and Henry Laughlin Alumnus of the Year Award from Temple University and the Chancellor’s Chair of Excellence in Psychiatry from the University of Missouri.
Dr. Lauriello continues to shape the future of psychiatry by mentoring new generations of psychiatrists and leading efforts to integrate academic research with clinical practice. His legacy is reflected in his transformative leadership, dedication to excellence in patient care, and enduring commitment to advancing psychiatric research and education.
