Journal Descriptions

Zeitschrift für celtische Philologie (ZCP) is one of the most prestigious and long-standing academic journals dedicated to Celtic studies. Founded in 1897 by prominent scholars Whitley Stokes and Kuno Meyer, it has played a foundational role in establishing Celtic philology as a serious academic discipline in Europe. The journal focuses on the study of Celtic languages, literature, and historical linguistics, with a strong emphasis on Old and Middle Irish, Welsh, Breton, and related traditions. ZCP publishes peer-reviewed research articles, critical editions of medieval manuscripts, linguistic analyses, and studies in historical grammar and etymology. It is especially known for its contributions to the understanding of early Irish literature and medieval Celtic cultural history. The journal is published annually and is currently issued by De Gruyter, Germany. Over more than a century of publication, ZCP has remained a central reference point for scholars in Celtic studies worldwide. It is widely indexed in international academic databases and continues to support advanced research in philology, manuscript studies, and Indo-European linguistics. Its long academic tradition makes it one of the most respected journals in the humanities.
