Journal Descriptions

The Working Paper series of the School of Geography at the University of Leeds is a long-established academic dissemination platform used to share preliminary research findings, theoretical developments, and methodological discussions in geography and environmental studies. Initiated in 1971, the series was designed to allow researchers to circulate ideas quickly before formal journal publication or to present work that may not fit traditional journal formats. These working papers cover a broad range of topics including physical geography, human geography, spatial analysis, water resource management, environmental change, and geographic information systems (GIS). Unlike peer-reviewed journals, the series traditionally functions as a semi-formal publication outlet, where papers may receive only minimal editorial review prior to release. This allows for faster dissemination of innovative or exploratory research. From the mid-1990s onward, the series transitioned from printed formats to online publication, improving accessibility and archival preservation. Although publication frequency is irregular, the series has historically contributed significantly to academic discourse within geography by enabling early-stage research sharing and interdisciplinary collaboration. Many working papers later evolve into peer-reviewed journal articles, making this series an important step in the academic research lifecycle.
