Journal Descriptions

Visual Communication is a peer reviewed interdisciplinary academic journal devoted to the study of how visual forms contribute to meaning making in communication across social, cultural, and institutional contexts. The journal focuses on the analysis of images, design, layout, typography, video, and other visual and multimodal resources as they appear in media, digital platforms, education, organizations, advertising, journalism, and everyday life. Drawing on approaches from communication studies, semiotics, linguistics, media studies, sociology, anthropology, visual culture, and design research, the journal publishes theoretical, empirical, and methodological work that advances understanding of visual meaning and visual interaction. Articles often examine how visual elements combine with language, sound, and movement to shape interpretation, identity, power relations, and social practices. The journal is especially known for its attention to multimodality and social semiotic analysis, offering insights into how visuals operate within broader communicative systems. In addition to traditional research articles, Visual Communication also welcomes innovative formats such as visual essays that experiment with visual argumentation as a scholarly method. By addressing both contemporary and historical visual practices, the journal serves as a key forum for researchers interested in the growing importance of visuality in communication, culture, and society.
