Journal Descriptions

Violence: An International Journal is dedicated to advancing the academic understanding of violence in all its manifestations and the scholarly efforts to prevent and move beyond it. The journal takes a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, drawing on sociology, political science, anthropology, cultural studies, and related social sciences. It publishes empirical research, theoretical debates, and interdisciplinary analyses that examine violence at individual, institutional, societal, and global levels. The scope includes studies of physical and structural violence, state repression, crime and delinquency, terrorism and political conflict, and social dynamics that both produce and respond to violent behavior. A distinctive element of the journal is its emphasis on “exiting violence”—that is, research on mechanisms of conflict resolution, peacebuilding, rehabilitation, and societal transformation after episodes of violence. Each issue interweaves thematic dossiers with broader contributions such as interviews and reflective essays, fostering dialogue between academic researchers, practitioners, and policy communities. By situating studies of violence in wider social, cultural, and historical contexts, the journal aims to foster a nuanced understanding that bridges rigorous scholarship with real-world relevance, contributing to public debates on violence and social change.
