The Prison Journal (TPJ)
Journal Descriptions
The Prison Journal is a long-standing, peer-reviewed scholarly publication dedicated to advancing understanding in the fields of criminology, correctional research, punishment theory, corrections policy, and practice. Established in 1921 by the Pennsylvania Prison Society — one of the oldest prison reform organizations in the United States — the journal has served as a foundational forum for rigorous, empirical, and theoretical studies on prison systems, alternative sanctions, and correctional interventions. Its articles include research reports, critical analyses, and comprehensive reviews that explore broad themes such as corrections administration, offender treatment, rehabilitation strategies, recidivism, legal and historical perspectives on confinement, and the intersection of social policy with justice systems. The journal also regularly publishes special issues devoted to current and emerging topics in corrections research, bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives from sociology, psychology, law, public policy, and public administration to inform both academic debate and evidence-based practice. The Prison Journal aims to enhance the knowledge of scholars, policymakers, and practitioners by providing evaluative accounts of innovative programs and policies, state-of-the-art surveys and reviews, and policy-relevant research that can shape better outcomes in the rapidly evolving world of corrections and criminal justice.
