The Modern Language Journal (MLJ)
Journal Descriptions
The Modern Language Journal is one of the longest-running peer-reviewed academic journals in language education, first published in 1916 and continuously issued to the present day. Its mission is to promote scholarly exchange among language researchers and teachers by publishing high-quality documented essays, empirical research studies using both quantitative and qualitative methods, response articles, and critical editorials that advance theories and practices in language learning and teaching. The journal’s coverage includes research on second language acquisition, instructional approaches, curriculum innovations, bilingualism, classroom interaction, language assessment, professional development, and interdisciplinary perspectives that connect applied linguistics with educational practice. In addition to regular quarterly issues, it periodically publishes a special fifth issue alternating between a focus theme and a monograph that offers an in-depth exploration of a specific topic. Topics such as teacher cognition, sociocultural approaches to learning, task-based language teaching, technology-enhanced instruction, and assessment literacy have appeared in recent volumes. The Modern Language Journal serves both researchers and practitioners by offering actionable insights grounded in rigorous scholarship, shaping contemporary discourse in language education globally. It is published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the National Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations, and is widely indexed and cited in education and linguistics databases.
