The English Historical Review (EHR)
Journal Descriptions
First published in January 1886, The English Historical Review (EHR) is the oldest journal of historical scholarship in the English-speaking world. It publishes original and exciting research relating to all parts of the world and all forms of historical inquiry from the Classical era onwards. The EHR includes major Articles and Review Articles, and an unusually extensive range of Reviews of books published throughout the world in English and other languages. On an annual basis it compiles Notices of Records, Texts and Reference Works, and provides a summary of a wide range of periodical literature The English Historical Review publishes original and high-quality historical research. There is no ‘typical’ EHR article, but we provide some guidance here on the scope and qualities that the editors look for in current article submissions and that they are keen to encourage in future ones. EHR is a ‘generalist’ history journal. This does not mean that we are uninterested in detailed and specialised research, but rather that we are committed to publishing the best work, in whatever field of study, being produced by historians today, which, because of its quality, scope and significance, will be of interest to a wide range of scholarly readers. The chronological remit of EHR is especially and intentionally broad: c. 400 C.E.to the present day. While EHR has a long track-record of carrying significant articles in British history, we publish research about the history of all world regions. This accords with the very broad geographical and linguistic coverage of the many books and periodicals we review each year.
