Journal Descriptions

The Australasian Journal of Optometry was a professional peer-informed journal originating in Australia and serving as an important publication platform for optometrists and vision science professionals during the twentieth century. It published research articles, clinical case reports, professional discussions, and updates relevant to the practice of optometry and ophthalmic care. The journal played a significant role in documenting developments in visual science, contact lenses, eye examination techniques, and public eye health practices across Australia and the Australasian region. Over time, the journal evolved in both scope and structure. It reflected the transition of optometry from a trade-based practice to a more research-driven clinical profession. The publication contributed to academic dialogue in ophthalmology and optometry, supporting practitioners with evidence-based insights and clinical innovations. Eventually, the journal underwent several title transformations and was incorporated into what is now known as Clinical and Experimental Optometry, which continues its academic legacy in a more modern peer-reviewed format. Although the original title is no longer actively published, its historical contributions remain important in the development of optometric science and professional standards in Australia and New Zealand.
