Journal Descriptions

The American Journal of Orthopedic Surgery was an influential early twentieth-century medical journal dedicated to orthopedic surgery and musculoskeletal medicine. Established in 1903 and published for the American Orthopedic Association, the journal provided a scholarly platform for surgeons and physicians specializing in the treatment of bone, joint, muscle, and spinal disorders. It played an important role in documenting the development of orthopedic surgical techniques during a formative period in modern medicine. The journal published clinical case reports, surgical innovations, research studies, and professional discussions related to fractures, deformities, trauma care, bone diseases, and rehabilitation methods. It contributed significantly to the advancement of orthopedic knowledge at a time when surgical procedures and medical technologies were rapidly evolving. As one of the early specialized orthopedic journals in the United States, it helped establish standards for orthopedic education and clinical practice. The publication also facilitated collaboration among surgeons and researchers through the American Orthopedic Association. The journal eventually became historically connected with later orthopedic publications, including the development of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, which continued and expanded the scientific legacy of orthopedic research and surgical practice internationally.
