Journal Descriptions

Studies in Scottish Literature, the senior journal of record in the field, with a broad international readership, promotes fresh research and debate on Scottish authors, works, and topics, from all literary genres and periods. Alongside research articles, shorter essays engage current broad debates in Scottish literary studies, illustrate archival discoveries, and discuss new scholarly books. Studies in Scottish Literature promotes new research and debate on Scottish authors, works, and topics, from all literary genres and all periods. As the senior journal of record in the field, with a broad international readership, it is best-known for research-based articles; many past articles are now much-cited standards on their topics. Alongside this traditional role, its symposia of shorter essays and occasional special issues engage current broad debates in Scottish literary studies. The continuing development of the field has brought new interest in bringing together literature and other disciplines and in exploring the interrelations between Scottish literature and other literatures. In each regular issue, shorter notes illustrate significant or recently-discovered primary documents, and a review section provides comment on relevant new scholarship. As it has done for 60 years, SSL welcomes contributions from varied critical perspectives and from writers of diverse age and background. Studies in Scottish Literature (or SSL) was founded in 1963 by G. Ross Roy (1924-2013), and he was its only editor for nearly fifty years (vols. 1-36). In 2012, Professor Roy donated rights to the journal to the University of South Carolina Libraries, so that it could continue under new editorship.
