StandardView (SV)
Journal Descriptions
StandardView was a quarterly journal published by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) from 1993 to 1998 that provided a dedicated venue for discussion and analysis of standardization in computing. At a time when information technology was rapidly evolving and interoperability challenges were growing, StandardView brought together practitioners, researchers, and policy thinkers to examine how technical standards are created, implemented, and governed. The periodical addressed both practical issues — such as how standards affect software design, systems integration, and business processes — and theoretical considerations, including the social and organizational dynamics of standardization efforts. Articles spanned descriptive case studies of specific standards efforts, analytical pieces on the economics of standardization, and discussions of institutional processes like W3C and ISO working groups. Renowned figures in the field of standards management contributed content, and the journal helped bridge the gap between academic research and industry practice. Although the publication was discontinued after Volume 6 in 1998, its archived issues remain a valuable historical resource for understanding how early computing communities approached standards and interoperability in software and networking.
