South African Music Studies (SAMS)
Journal Descriptions
SAMUS: South African Music Studies is the official organ for the South African Society for Research in Music (SASRIM). It gives priority to the publication of research on South African music, but continues to represent the wider field of research interests in the country and in the rest of Africa. The journal invites work from any of the sub-disciplines in music studies, including musicology, ethnomusicology, popular music studies, music theory and music education, as well as research that draws connections between music and other fields in the arts and humanities. SAMS focuses on exploring music as a cultural, social, historical, and artistic phenomenon. It highlights African musical traditions while also engaging with global music scholarship. Topics include indigenous music systems, contemporary African music, popular music studies, sound studies, music technology, and interdisciplinary research linking music with anthropology, sociology, and history. The journal follows a rigorous peer-review process to maintain academic quality and originality. It is an open-access journal, allowing free access to all published content, which supports global dissemination of African music scholarship. SAMS is indexed in academic databases such as Scopus and DOAJ, making it a recognized platform for music research. It plays an important role in preserving musical heritage, promoting African music research, and supporting scholarly dialogue in music studies internationally.
