Journal Descriptions

Sophia: An African Journal of Philosophy and Public Affairs is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Department of Philosophy, University of Calabar, Nigeria. Established in 1998, the journal provides a scholarly platform for philosophical discourse with a strong emphasis on African philosophical thought and public affairs. It is not affiliated with any specific philosophical school but promotes critical engagement across diverse traditions of philosophy, including analytic, continental, and indigenous African perspectives. The journal welcomes original research articles, theoretical essays, and interdisciplinary studies that engage with philosophy and related disciplines such as social sciences, education, environmental studies, and management sciences. Its central aim is to encourage philosophizing within the African context while remaining open to global philosophical debates. Sophia follows a strict double-blind peer-review process to ensure academic quality, originality, and intellectual rigor. It is published biannually, releasing two issues each year. The journal serves as an important academic outlet for scholars interested in African philosophy, ethical issues, and socio-political analysis, contributing significantly to philosophical scholarship in Africa and beyond. It also provides a platform for emerging researchers to contribute to contemporary philosophical discussions addressing real-world social and cultural challenges.
