Sociological Research Online (SRO)
Journal Descriptions
Sociological Research Online is a pioneering online-only, peer-reviewed academic journal in sociology, first launched in 1996 as one of the earliest digital scholarly journals in the social sciences. It is jointly published by the British Sociological Association (BSA) and SAGE Publishing, and capitalizes on electronic publishing to present research that uses diverse formats including traditional qualitative and quantitative studies, as well as innovative audio, visual, and video research outputs. The journal’s broad scope includes theoretical discussions, empirical research, methodological explorations, and reflections on public and private social issues, making it a dynamic forum for contemporary sociological inquiry. Its editorial emphasis is on work that applies sociological analysis to understand complex social phenomena, engages with current political and cultural debates, and contributes to methodological development. Sociological Research Online also features Rapid Response pieces that allow sociologists to comment on unfolding public events, as well as thematic special sections that assemble research around key topics in sociology. By providing an accessible electronic platform, the journal fosters timely scholarly communication without traditional format constraints and remains indexed in major abstracting databases, contributing to global sociological research and dialogue.
