Social Currents (SC)
Journal Descriptions
Established in 2014, Social Currents is a dynamic, peer‑reviewed sociological journal that serves as the official academic publication of the Southern Sociological Society and is published by SAGE Publications. The journal’s mission is to stimulate forward‑looking and impactful research in the social sciences by providing a platform for both concise, agenda‑setting theoretical essays and full‑length empirical and conceptual articles. Each issue is structured to prioritize short pieces that articulate novel theoretical insights, highlight methodological innovations, or draw attention to data‑driven trends that matter to the broader sociological community. These are followed by standard research articles that deepen understanding of substantive topics in sociology, such as social inequalities, cultural dynamics, health disparities, political behavior, and systemic change. Through this format, Social Currents bridges innovative thought with rigorous research, encouraging dialogue across diverse subfields and methodological approaches. Its interdisciplinary reach draws contributors from sociology and related disciplines, and its publication schedule — six issues per year — ensures a regular flow of contemporary research that responds to evolving societal challenges. By publishing work that engages with both theoretical significance and practical relevance, Social Currents contributes to advancing sociological scholarship and shaping research agendas within and beyond the discipline.
