Journal Descriptions

Science & Society is a well-established quarterly academic journal founded in 1936 and recognized as the longest continuously published Marxist scholarly journal in any language. It offers a peer-reviewed forum for rigorous interdisciplinary research and critical inquiry rooted in Marxist thought, while also incorporating analytical tools and perspectives from broader social and human sciences. The journal’s scope encompasses political economy and economic analysis of contemporary societies, social and political theory, the philosophy of science and methodology, historical studies, labor and ethnic studies, women’s studies, critical race theory, cultural analysis, literature, and the arts. Contributors draw on both historical and contemporary materials to examine how systems of power, class relations, ideology, and social structures evolve and interact. Science & Society does not limit itself to any one Marxist school; rather, it encourages engagement with diverse strands of Marxist tradition — old and new, East and West — alongside progressive ideas from mainstream social science. Across its pages are theoretical essays, empirical studies, and critical reviews that aim to advance scholarly debates and provide deep insights into fundamental issues of social justice, economic dynamics, and human emancipation. The journal’s longstanding publication history reflects its continued influence in Marxist scholarship and critical social theory.
