The battle being played out over the heads of businesses and workers is plain for all to see. Labor law is at the center of a series of reforms that emphasize—as never before—its compatibility with other values: not only economic compatibility (as is obvious), but also that of the state budget and, above all, that which allows us Italians to sit at the table of our European partners with all our papers in order, having diligently completed the lesson we were assigned. In a context like the one described, God only knows how much need there is for legal rationality. Without getting bogged down in sterile discussions about the authority or primacy of law over other social sciences, it is indisputable that law has cognitive needs and must satisfy specific applicative purposes. Like language, law is based on the observance of rules, which are also rules of communication , which allow interaction between the protagonists of social contact. Law, like language, has its own institutional dimension. Here it is: Labor —and I hope this doesn't sound naive —will address the grammar of labor law; those key words that allow us to engage in dialogue, drawing inspiration—it goes without saying—from the infinite stimuli offered by legal culture (including scholars and practitioners, who are its inseparable components). Our hope is that this will result in a glossary that will help us navigate the labyrinth of legal discourse.
