Journal Descriptions

Created by Henri Berr in 1900, the Revue de Synthèse historique, of which the patrimonial collection is provided here to facilitate the current works of historians and philosophers, gave impetus to the historiographical renewal of the 20th century by mobilising the philosophers, historians and social scientists involved in the European debates on methods in the human sciences at the beginning of this century, and by promoting a programme that was resolutely distinct from cumulative erudition on the one hand and from speculations on the philosophy of history on the other. Berr and his emulators, such as Lucien Febvre, Marc Bloch and François Simiand, developed a model that was subsequently illustrated by the major books published in the Évolution de l’Humanité collection and by the development of the ‘Nouvelle histoire’, particularly in the columns of Annales, created in 1929. In 1910, Berr wrote: ‘We have formed the ideal of a journal that would constantly rejuvenate and renew itself, always focusing its efforts on the right side’. Its later renewal was the creation of Revue de Synthèse (1931).
