Although Surco Sur Magazine is literary in nature, its academic component is evident in the composition of its Editorial Board, the level of content addressed in its articles, interviews, and critical reviews, and the spaces offered to students and faculty. The magazine's various sections aim to balance spaces for creation, critical assessment, and commentary, where poetry, short stories, conversation, and theoretical meditation contribute to the understanding of the artistic and literary work of Latin American authors, whether based in their own countries or abroad—diaspora, according to many—where work with very unique ingredients is being produced. In the various editorials published, you can learn about the origins, characteristics, motivations, and expectations that have given rise to this magazine. Many have asked about the title, Surco Sur. I believe the two voices identify our doing and our being in the earth: the cultivation of the soul is a metaphor for the cultivation of the land. Already Marcus Pontius Cato, in Ancient Greece, focused on the double component of sowing: in the earth and in the spirit. Agriculture implies both agriculture and culture. Later, Cicero would call it cultura animi. Even today, we call an educated person, a person with culture, cultivated. Many poets have used this metaphor of the furrow. Because it doesn't just identify the cleft in the earth where seeds germinate. It is also a wrinkle, a mark on the face, on the skin, from the passage of time. So, furrow is also a footprint, a track, a ditch, a road, a sign, a stele, a trail. The main objectives of Surco Sur Magazine are: To contribute to the knowledge and defense of Hispanic American literature and artistic creation through the publication of poetry, short stories, articles, and reviews of works of art and books by or about Hispanic American authors.
