Review of Research in Education (RRE)
Journal Descriptions
Review of Research in Education (RRE) is a prominent annual academic journal with a legacy dating back to 1973. Published by SAGE Publications on behalf of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the journal’s main purpose is to advance understanding of education through comprehensive reviews and critical syntheses of existing research literature. Each yearly volume of RRE is centered on a focused theme or topic of broad relevance to the field of education, and it brings together contributions that examine the development, findings, and implications of key research traditions. Unlike traditional empirical journals, RRE does not primarily publish new experimental or survey studies; instead, it offers high-level scholarly overviews that interpret and integrate findings from multiple studies, illuminating the evolution of ideas, identifying patterns and tensions in the literature, and framing future research agendas. These reviews often span multiple disciplines that inform education — including psychology, sociology, cultural studies, economics, and policy analysis — and they address pressing challenges such as teaching effectiveness, learning processes, equity and access, instructional innovation, educational policy impact, and methodological rigor. Through its annual volumes, RRE supports rigorous intellectual dialogue, shapes scholarly debates, and helps guide researchers, practitioners, and policymakers toward a deeper and more coherent understanding of complex educational issues.
